Are we a good fit?
I am loyal to my clients and enjoy supporting them as they disseminate their research and advance their careers.
Will I be working with you or an associate?
I am a one-person shop. I do not subcontract any work. When you engage in any of the professional development opportunities offered by Pat Walsh Writing Coach, LLC, you will be working directly with me, Pat Walsh.
Do I have to sign a contract?
No. I do not have a contract for institutional clients; rather, I sign your institution’s independent contractor agreement and am issued a purchase order. I submit my invoice after the course is completed. If you have engaged me for one-on-one writing coaching as an institutional client, you can stop at any time. You will estimate the amount you want to spend on writing coaching and your institution issues a purchase order. You schedule two-hour sessions with me on an as-needed basis and are under no obligation to schedule enough sessions to reach the total of the purchase order.
I do not have a contract for private pay clients. If you have engaged me for one-on-one writing coaching as a private client, you schedule 2-hour sessions with me on an as-needed basis. You are under no obligation to schedule a certain number of sessions and can stop working with me at any time.
If you sign up for the 10-week Writing Intensive Writing Course, you pay the full per-person fee upfront. You are not entitled to reimbursement for any sessions you do not attend. If I cancel a session for any reason, I will offer the cohort a make-up session that is convenient for the cohort.
If you sign up for a six-week series of the Saturday Writing Salon, you pay the full per-person fee upfront. You are not entitled to reimbursement for any sessions you do not attend. If I cancel a session for any reason, I will offer you a make-up session at the same time on another Saturday.
How long do people work with you?
Some researchers need me to help them with only one troublesome manuscript. Others work with me on each manuscript for a few years while they master the skills of manuscript writing. Still other researchers develop a career-long partnership with me as they undertake increasingly competitive writing projects.
Which of your professional development opportunities should I choose?
Please schedule a free consultation with me so I can learn about your needs and advise you on which professional development opportunities are best for you or your team.
What has been your experience working with researchers who are non-native English speakers?
I have extensive experience and expertise coaching researchers for whom English is their second (or third, fourth, or fifth!) language. I have observed that those who know more than one language tend to catch on faster to my writing coaching than monolinguists. Multilinguists seem to have greater patience for finding just the right word, which is key to writing with precision. I surmise that this is because they have deep experience navigating different vocabularies. Researchers who are fluent in more than one language also seem to have a better understanding of sentence structure. This is undoubtable due to their heightened awareness of the variance in sentence structure across languages. I have also found that multilinguist researchers appreciate that ongoing revision will get them closer to meaning, understand that mastery is a developmental process, and are eager to face the challenge of communicating to different audiences. I believe that knowing more than one language is a considerable asset to researchers who are striving to improve their scientific writing. While we edit their manuscript together, the writer and I identify patterns in English usage that need to be corrected. I help the writer practice avoiding these patterns until they are no longer an issue.
Do you provide one-on-one coaching to researchers on other projects besides manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals?
Yes, I provide individualized coaching on career-advancing projects.
Can I join the 10-week manuscript writing course as an individual?
Yes! You will join three researchers from other institutions to form the cohort for the course.
Do you work with international clients?
Yes, I welcome international clients! I am in the Central Time Zone of the United States.
