PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
10-week Intensive Course On Manuscript Writing
Help increase the number of high-impact publications associated with your science institute’s grant number.
Help increase the number of high-impact publications associated with the grant number connected to your group or science institute.
This course is designed for a small cohort of four researchers actively drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. The cohort can be comprised of four researchers from your group or individual researchers can join a cohort that I form with three other researchers working in different institutions. Each participant develops and completes a manuscript of competitive quality in 10 weeks. The course is a hybrid of master class and workshop.
In our weekly two-hour group session, I demonstrate best practices in manuscript writing while leading the cohort in conceptual, developmental, and line editing of one another’s manuscripts.
Cohort members and I serve as critical readers, asking astute questions that push authors to:
-
- write an accurate and compelling title and abstract
- build a strong case for their work in the introduction
- achieve clarity and precision in the methods section
- present findings in a logical and understandable manner
- construct a focused discussion that gives context to the findings
- write a conclusion that matches the data
After 10 weeks at this level of intense writing and editing, each researcher will have produced a superb manuscript draft to send to their co-authors for review. Because their coauthors are receiving a polished draft, coauthors can concentrate on contributing points that bolster the case for the work (rather than wasting their time on editing).
BENEFITS
-
- Completes a manuscript of competitive quality in 10 weeks.
- Acquires professional writing skills.
- Incorporates transformative feedback.
- Establishes a sustainable writing practice.
This novel approach to skills acquisition in manuscript writing aligns with the spirit of collaboration that distinguishes team science.
Thirty-six cohorts of researchers from four NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Centers and a university division have completed my course.
Course Details
